‘World Gaming Day’ – The day the world will Game!


Sony Ericsson joins hands with Zapak.com and Xbox 360 to launch the celebrations for ‘World Gaming Day’

New Delhi, 5th February, 2009: Everyone is gaming together! The gaming behemoths of India – Sony Ericsson, Zapak.com and Microsoft XBOX 360, today announced ‘World Gaming Day’ the largest ever youth connect initiative to celebrate the spirit of gaming which will be celebrated on 12th February 2009 across the globe. This first of its kind global initiative from India would be jointly promoted across mediums by Zapak.com, Sony Ericsson and Xbox 360 and is intended to be an annual feature.

World Gaming Day is expected to pull at least 10 million gamers from across the world to be part of the celebrations. With prizes worth over Rs. 3 crores* at stake, the excitement is bound to be at an all time high! The India celebrations are scheduled to take place in Mumbai and winners get a chance to play against the best in Bollywood on 12-Feb-09.

The gaming industry worldwide is estimated to touch US$46.5 bn by 2010 (as per PWC Media Outlook ‘07-’11). The Gaming Industry in India is poised to touch US$200 mn by 2011 (According to Nasscom). With international markets increasingly catering to requirements of the global gaming industry, India’s contribution to the industry and its development is undoubtedly zooming up - both at the global and domestic level.

Gamers from across the world were present at the event to unveil the celebrations for ‘World Gaming Day’. Spotted in high enthusiasm along with them was Aftab Shivdasani, an Actor and an Avid gamer. Commenting on ‘World Gaming Day’ he said, “Gaming is one of my passion. I play as often as I can - on my mobile, on my laptop or even on console at home. It feels great to be a part of the celebrations for ‘World Gaming Day’ and I am glad that Sony Ericsson, Zapak and Xbox 360 have taken such an initiative at a global level.”

Sony Ericsson, the title sponsor of the initiative also launched – Sony Ericsson F305 with unique motion gaming technology. The phone can follow your actions to imitate bowling or casting a fishing line. Sony Ericsson F305 is essentially an attempt by Sony Ericsson to provide consumers superior gaming experience on mobile phones.

There are various contests and activities involved in the celebration for ‘World Gaming Day’ which include mall activities, championships at Zapak Gameplexes and an online contest. To participate, users need to log on to www.zapak.com and start gaming. Prizes worth Rs. 3 crore* are up for grabs. The participants will get a chance to compete against best of Bollywood on 12 Feb 09 – World Gaming Day.
